I'm so glad my posts resonated with you! And I love that you made a physical representation of your dream! Another way to fight the envy is to realize that we're all in the same boat (looking over at the superyachts, I guess?). And thank you so much for plugging my book. ❤️

I would have liked to link to Rebecca Makkai's column but it was only in the print edition. But yeah, she says basically the same thing -- no matter how successful you are, you're always comparing yourself to someone more successful. The key is to recognize it for what it is and just keep doing the work anyway :-)

Thank you for this. Creative envy is real and real defeating. 'Things take as long as they take' is a great reminder that we are all on different timelines.

Don't know if it relates to envy, but the best advice i've heard recently is that "comparison is the thief of joy". It reminds me of this one time a few years ago where I had to hand in a digital art project for my digital arts class, While the art project turned out great, there was some parts of it which I wasn't happy about. I didn't expect to win it at all given that there were some art projects that were much better than mine in my opinion, but the next day I found out that my art project came in second place losing to first place only by eight votes. In the end I wasn't happy about winning second place, I enjoyed the process of creating my project along with printing it as well. So I guess if I do have advice don't worry about the end result just trust the process.

Thanks so much for reading and your comment, Fahim :-) I read something recently with a different take on that quote about comparison being the thief of joy. It made the point that comparison by itself is neutral - it's judgment that comes after comparison that causes us to feel certain ways about the comparison. And I thought that was such a good point. We so often add judgment as a natural follow-on to comparison that we don't even realize they can be separated.

This! A lot of us need to remember this and to not hate ourselves for feeling professional/creative jealousy. That way lies madness! Thanks for a great read!

Hi Louise

Thanks for making me feel normal.

I have one writter friend who made the Oprah Daily must read list and her novel was listed in the June 3 issue of People Magazine as a best summer read.

I have another writer friend that was just awarded a mentorship, writing retreat, and publishing guidance from Reese Witherspoon’s book club.

Am I Jealous?

Hell to the Yes!!!

I was feeling bad about my attitude but you made me feel better!!!

To paraphrase words of those singers and immortal philosophers, “Ruby and the Romantics “

Our Day Will Come.
