It feels like there's a resurgence for these type of comedies that I haven't seen in a long time. I think it might be because either A) there are so many really good movies that are being made that it drowns out these comedies. B) Superhero movies have just been so dominant in the last decade, or C) I haven't been paying to much attention to the movie industry, and comedy films are still popular. All we need now is a Vince Vaughan, Owen Wilson with Will Ferrell comedy to confirm the comeback!
OMG the superhero movies -- how many do we really need?? I think I’ve seen three, and two of those were the first Wonder Woman and Black Panther. But I suppose it’s escapist, and people are looking for escapes these days. But I’d much rather escape with a good comedy like this. Owen Wilson, are you listening?😆
I think you’ll like it! It’s a good time in the theater. Reminded me of when things seemed less complicated. Not that they really were 😉. But there’s a long tradition of going to a dark theater to escape that we’ve missed out on with the advent of streaming.
Thanks so much for your well-written review, Louise. Like you, I am a movie buff and really like socially relevant films -- hard to come by these days. I recommend "The Sound of Freedom," which is based on a true story about child sex trafficking. Sure, it is grim subject but this crowd-funded movie is definitely worth seeing. The movie is playing in wide release in San Diego County. I saw it yesterday at the Vista Cinepolis for the bargain price of $6. The movie theatre was packed! If you DO see it, please post a review. Thanks again for your excellent writing.
Nice newsletter, Louise. I find that American TV punches down a lot. Particularly sitcoms. yes, making fun of the less powerful or less intelligent. But also going for the easy joke over character. Maybe the character will have a moment of depth feeling and the writers undercut it with a joke. I see very few comedies in the movies or TV that I like. It's too much the easy laugh.
I wonder if that has something to do with the American male idea of vulnerability as weakness. Not just American males I guess but it’s definitely prevalent in our culture. If you show any vulnerability you then have to counter with humor to deflect.
Love this review! Admittedly, I tear up easily this day. But I have to say I did get a little watery around the eyes when the protagonist asked if he could kiss his crush. 💕 May consent culture become a thing!
Glad our shared class the other day brought me to you, Louise!
Great review, Louise! And thank you so much for your kind words about our podcast on this flick *blushing*
Rob
P.S. We shouted your review out on our show the other night - here's a timecoded link to it :-)

Thanks so much for the shout-out! I love it 😍
The early 80s was so contradictory. You can be anything you want to be! Especially if you want to be a blond tutor!
That sums it up nicely I think 😆

Thanks for the recommendation, Pat
Great newsletter, Louise! And now I'm adding two movies I would have overlooked to my TBW.
Great! I hope you like them 😊

I know, right?? May we get to the point that seeing consent modeled this way is unremarkable.
